Middlesbrough Schools’ Teaching Alliance, Middlesbrough Catholic Schools’ Partnership and Tees Valley Education are delighted to share with schools, details of the exceptional team of Specialist Leaders of Education [SLEs] who work on our behalf.
The current 2016-17 team comprises 44 SLEs working from a range of primary, secondary and special schools and academies. Our SLEs are experienced teachers with different areas of expertise and collectively they possess a wealth of skills in coaching, mentoring, leading and developing others. Our SLEs are effective communicators, enthusiastic about their specialist areas of interest and are accountable to MSTA, MCSP and TVEd for the impact of their work.
SLEs will have demonstrated highly effective practice within their own schools and beyond, bringing to their roles a commitment to school improvement through continuous professional development, sustainable leadership development and school-to-school support.
SLEs may be nominated by their Head Teachers or Principals and this is often in recognition of the work they have undertaken as middle or senior leaders. They will have a proven track-record supported by substantial evidence of impact and sustainable improvement.
SLEs focus on developing leadership capacity. While other roles (for example, advanced skills teachers) previously focused on developing classroom expertise, this role is about developing other leaders so that they have the skills to lead their own teams and improve practice in their own schools. This may be done through one-to-one or group support and could involve a variety of activities, such as:
- data analysis
- devising joint action plans
- coaching and mentoring
- prioritising improvement
- sharing resources
- modelling best practice
- facilitating and training
- leading meetings/network groups
- leading CPD
- observing lessons and giving effective feedback
Types of deployments will vary. For example, one might be a 2 day diagnostic exercise, while another might require a 3 month, full time support role. Time may be taken as a block of consecutive days or spread over a longer period depending on the requirements of the requesting school and the capacity for release of the SLEs own school.
